The History of Stem Cell Research

The idea of cells were never brought up until the mid-1800's when scientists realized anything living was made up of cells and that some cells could change into other cells. Soon after this discovery, people then realized that certain cells were able to turn into blood cells. And by the time scientists and biologists knew it, the first bone marrow transplant was successful in 1968. As time went by until present day, a lot happened, different cells were proven to produce other cells in the body which caused a break through in the study of stem cells in 1999 and 2000. There was a lot of controversies about stem cell research being wrong or right but when a breakthrough study shows that stem cells are found in umbilical cords, that should be the end of embryonic stem cells, right? Wrong. Because there are very few stem cells in the umbilical cord and they do not grow well, embryonic stem cells are in favor. Until more breakthrough studies of more stem cell sources, this controversy might always be existent.
